Hong Kong Wealth Gap Essay Example for Free
Hong Kong Wealth Gap Essay According to the Development of the Human Race Report, which published in 2005, the wealth gap of Hong Kong is the widest within the thirty high living standard countries/regions. Local View The rich is getting richer, and the poor is getting poorer. For instance, in 2001, 10% of the highest income family in Hong Kong, their natural income still had 5% growth after the 97 Financial Storms. On the other hand, the natural income of 60% Hong Kong family kept decreasing at the same time. Sometime, the wealth gap problem is a type of circulation. For example, some poor is living in poverty life because he/she had low educational level and he/she now cannot afford the education fee for their children, when the children grow up, they will remain poor or even poorer. Yet out of Hong Kongs seven million residents, an estimated 1. 25 million people are living below the poverty line. You may ask what does the life of poor people look like. Well, nothing, they have nothing at all. Imagine you are living in a cage home, a flat which can only let you sit and sleep, everyday you eat pot noodles for every meal, wear the same clothes and use the same towel without cleaning, how dirty is it! Besides, when you go to the street, people stand back from you because you are so dirty. The adults may point at you and tell the children to study hard so that they dont need to live like you in the future. What is your feeling of these? Yes, it is another problem, discrimination. Poverty is the excuse of discrimination. People are not actually care about the feelings of poor people. Definition of poverty Poverty means going short materially, socially and emotionally. It means spending less on food, on heating, and on clothing than someone on an average income. Above all, poverty takes away the tools to build the blocks for the future your life chance. It steals away the opportunity to have a life unmarked by sickness, a decent education, secure home and a long retirement.

Analysis Of A Hotel Management System
Analysis Of A Hotel Management System This is software which has mainly made for management of a Hotel. The software has been designed with front-end as VB and backend as Oracle. The project Hotel Management manages maintains the records of customers and room in the hotel. The rooms have different categories. So there charges and records will be maintained accordingly. This software has been made in a user friendly interface, so that normal persons can add, delete the entries of customers and handle all the transactions easily. SYSTEM ANALYSIS The initial analysis is made by knowing the user requirements. In analysis phase, we have analyzed the users requirement such as:- Addition of the record of the customer who comes into the hotel ,deletion of the record when customer leaves the hotel, printing and calculation of the bill ,record of facilities available in the hotel ,allotment of the rooms etc. In this project we have also analyzed that the product or software should not be very costly but its quality and interface must be attractive. If any wrong operation is being performed then the software must invoke the operator accordingly. FEASIBILITY STUDY A feasibility study is carried out to select the best system that must performance requirement and its working ability in an organization. The feasibility of the system has been done in three types:- -Technical Feasibility Study -Economical Feasibility Study -Behavioral Feasibility Study TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY Technically we have made feasibility in keeping mind about the hardware so that the designed software can work smoothly with maximum efficiency with the hardware. ECONOMICAL FEASIBILITY In this we mainly calculate the cost of proposed system and the cost of customer and compare the cost to meet the users cost. The cost of hardware, facility cost, operating and supply costs are considered. The cost of feasibility is also considered on this such as wiring, lightning, A.C. etc. BEHAVIOURAL FEASIBILITY We have to consider the cost of staff which has special efforts to educate, sell train on new ways. SOFTWARE HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS There are some software and hardware requirements of the software hotel management system. SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS -Visual Basic.net as frontend -Oracle Database as backend -Windows 7 home Premium HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS -Pentium- 4 processor -40 more GB for data storage -128 to 512 KB RAM -Printer for reporting and printing IMPLEMENTATION To implement this project, HOTEL MANAGEMENT will require a visual basic as front end Oracle Database as back end. SYSTEM DESIGN In this software we have developed some forms. The brief description about them is as follow:- MDI FORM This is the main form. It contains following fields:- Hotel Customer Reservation Room Room Category Search On moving the cursor to any of the above fields, drop down menus will be displayed user can click on any of the options available in them and their respective forms will open. Hotel The main purpose of this form is to add a new hotel to the database. For this purpose, the user will be required to fill the Hotel id, Hotel Name and their address. After filling all the entries, when we click on the on the save button, the record will be added to the database. Customer In this form, user can add a new customer to the records. For this purpose, the user will be required to fill the customer id, name of the occupants, their address. After filling all the entries, when we click on the Submit button, the record will be added to the database. Reservation This is the reservation form where the user inputs customers reservation details, for example: Reservation Id, Customer Id, Hotel Id, Reservation date, Arrival dates and so on. The user can select the type of rooms by inputting the room category id from the list box. The charges per day of this room are displayed in the list itself. After filling all the entries, when the user click save button, the records will be added to the database. C:UsersWindows 7DesktopUntitled.png Room This is the room form, where the user search total rooms in the hotel by the room details like hotel id, room number and room category id. After filling all the entries, when the user click search button, the user will be able to view the types of room by their room details. Room Category This is the room category form where the user inputs details in the room categories in the hotel by the room details like category id, category name and number of beds. After filling all the entries, when the user click save button, the user will be able to view the types of room by their room details Search This form search all the database according the input of the user, If the input is found in the database, then message box input found and the result will be displayed, In the other hand, if the user inputs incorrect input, a msg box displays input not found please try again. And no result will be displayed. C:UsersWindows 7Desktopsearch.png System Study Analysis PRINCIPLES OF SYSTEM ANALYSIS -Understand the problem before you begin to create the analysis model. -Develop prototypes that enable a user to understand how human machine interaction will occur. -Record the origin of and the reason for every requirement. -Use multiple views of requirements like building data, function and behavioral models. -Work to eliminate ambiguity. ENTITY RELATIONSHIP DIAGRAM (ERD) Entity-Relationship Diagram This depicts relationship between data objects. The attribute of each data objects noted in the entity- relationship diagram can be described using a data object description. Data flow diagram serves two purposes: -To provide an induction of how data are transformed as they move through the system. -To depict the functions that transformation the data flow. Data Objects A data object is a representation of almost any composite information that must be understood by the software. By composite information, we mean something that has a number of different properties or attributes. A data object encapsulates data only there is no reference within a data object to operations that act on the data. Attributes: Attributes define the properties of a data object and take on one of three different characteristics. They can be used to; -Name an instance of data object. -Describe the instance -Make reference to another instance in other table. Relationship Data objects are connected to one another in a variety of different ways. We can define a set of object relationship pairs that define the relevant relationships. E-R DIAGRAM CUSTOMER HOTEL CHECK IN ROOM INFORMATION ROOM ROOM RECORD CUSTOMER HOTEL CHECK OUT CUSTOMER ROOM ROOM PRICE HOTEL DATA MODELING Data modeling defines primary data objects, composition of each data object, and attributes of the object and other objects and between objects and processes. Hotel Table Fields Type Hotel Id Varchar2 Hotel Name Varchar2 Address Varchar2 City Varchar2 Phone No Number Number of Stars Varchar2 Customer Table Fields Type Customer Id Varchar2 First Name Varchar2 Last Name Varchar2 Gender Varchar2 Address Varchar2 Phone No Number Email Address Varchar2 Reservation Fields Type Reservation Id Varchar2 Customer Id Varchar2 Hotel Id Varchar2 Reservation Date Date Arrival Date Date Departure Date Date Room Category Varchar2 Status Varchar2 Total Cost Number Room Field Type Hotel Id Varchar2 Room Number Number Category Id Varchar2 Room Category Field Type Category Id Varchar2 Category Name Varchar2 Number Of Beds Number Search In this function, room, customer as user can search detail from the database according to their authentication. CONCLUSION This project have been designed in a great user friendly and largely providing attribute interface and tp meet the requirement of a Hotel Management System.. The project is working with quick response and same level of security is also maintained. The Oracle database is maintained and frontend with Visual Basic. In this designing system, I have used an ER Diagrams; overall this project teaches us the essential skill like; -Understanding the Oracle database handling and query processing. -Using system analysis and design techniques like ER diagram and Data modeling in designing the system.

Mexico And Borders :: essays research papers
International borders have always been centers of conflict, and the U.S.-Mexican border is no exception. With the European colonizing the New World, it was a matter of time before the powers collided. The Spanish settled what is today Mexico, while the English settled what is to day the United States. When the two colonial powers did meet what is today the United Statesââ¬â¢ Southwest, it was not England and Spain. Rather the two powers were the United States and Mexico. Both Counties had broken off from their mother countries. The conflict that erupted between the two countries where a direct result of different nation policies. The United States had a policy of westward expansion, while Mexico had a policy of self protection. The Americans never had a written policy of expansion. What they had was the idea of "Manifest Destiny." Manifest Destiny was the belief that the United States had the right to expand westward to the Pacific ocean. On the other hand, Mexico was a new country wanting to protect itself from outside powers. Evidence of U.S. expansion is seen with the independence of Texas from Mexico. The strongest evidence of U.S. expansion goals is with the Mexican-American War. From the beginning, the war was conceived as an opportunity for land expansion. Mexico feared the United States expansion goals. During the 16th century, the Spanish began to settle the region. The Spanish had all ready conquered and settled Central Mexico. Now they wanted to expand their land holdings north. The first expedition into the region, that is today the United States Southwest, was with Corando. Corando reported a region rich in resources, soon after people started to settle the region. The driving force behind the settlement was silver in the region. The Spanish settled the region through three major corridors; central, western and eastern. The first settlements were mainly through the central corridor. The Spanish went thorough what is now the modern Mexican state of Chihuahua into the U.S. state of New Mexico. Eventually the Spanish established the city of Santa Fe in 1689. The eastern corridor was through modern day Texas and led to the establishment of San Antonio. The eastern expansion was caused by the French expansion into modern day Louisiana. The Spanish crown wanted a buffer between the French in Louisiana and central Mexico. The last corridor of expansion was in the west, through the sea, which led to the establishment of San Diego in 1769 and Los

Child Abuse and Neglect Essay -- Violence Against Children
Child abuse is the intentional omission of care by a parent or guardian that can cause a child to be hurt, maimed, or even killed. Child abuse can be either physical, mental, emotional or sexual. Because of child abuse, Caprice Ried will never do the things that a normal four-year old does. She will never play on a playground, or go to a sleepover, and never go to school. All of this was taken away from her at such a young age, when she died of child abuse. The foster parents, Patricia Coker, and her mother Betty Coker have been charged with second degree murder for Capriceââ¬â¢s death. Caprice went without food for days. She was also tied to a chair and beaten with a stick until she couldnââ¬â¢t walk. Several days later, she was found dead. à à à à à As horrible as this story seems, this scene happens way to often. In 1996, approximately 3,126,000 children were reported for child abuse. Currently, about 47 out of every 1,000 children are reported as victims of child abuse and maltreatment. Overall, child abuse reporting levels have increased 45% between 1987 and 1996. à à à à à In 1996, an estimated 1,046 child abuse and neglect related fatalities were confirmed by Child Protective Services, (CPS) agencies. Since 1985, the rate of child abuse fatalities has increased by 20%. Based on these numbers, more than three children die each day as a result of child abuse or neglect. à à à à à In 1996, some states reported that almost 77% of these children that died were less than five years old at the time of their death, while 45% were under 1 year of age. The causes of death were 45% neglect, 52% physical abuse, 3% from a combination of neglect and physical abuse. Studies of the general population show that anywhere from 6% to 63% of women were sexually abused as children. A 1985 L.A. Times national survey found that 27% of women and 16% of men reported being sexually abused prior to age 18. The true extent of sexual abuse in unknown. à à à à à The relationship between parental alcohol or other drug problems and child maltreatment is becoming increasingly evident. And the risk to the child increases in a single parent household where there is no supporting adult to diffuse parental stress and protect the child from the effects of the parents problem. à à à à à Both alcohol and drug problems are widespread in this country. Mark Twain, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay
In the novel by Mark Twain, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the two main characters, Huck and Jim, are strongly linked. Their relation is portrayed by various sides, some of them good and some others bad. But the essential interest of that relation is the way that uses the author to describe it. Even if he had often been misunderstood, Twain always implied a message behind the themes developed around Huck and Jim. The first encounter between Huck Finn and Jim is at the beginning of the book, when Huckââ¬â¢s friend, Tom Sawyer, tries to fool Jim, Miss Watsonââ¬â¢s slave. Huck and Jim still donââ¬â¢t know each other, but Huck isnââ¬â¢t biased against the old slave. Itââ¬â¢s an important point because, as racism was a widely held mentality in the South, we can learn that that young boy was more open-minded than most people there. Later, they find themselves in the same situation. As they were escaping from the civilized world, they take refuge in the Jacksonââ¬â¢s Island, on the Mississippi river. Huck is running away from a bad father and Jim has leaved Miss Watson because he didnââ¬â¢t want to be sold to New Orleans. Look more:à huck finn chapter 20 essay Soon after joining Jim on the island, Huck begins to realize that Jim has more talents and intelligence than Huck has been aware of. Jim knows ââ¬Å"all kinds of signsâ⬠about the future, peopleââ¬â¢s personalities, and weather forecasting. Huck finds this kind of information necessary as he and Jim drift down the Mississippi on a raft. As important, Huck feels a comfort with Jim that he has not felt with the other major characters in the novel. With Jim, Huck can enjoy the best aspects of his earlier influences. Jimââ¬â¢s meaning to Huck changes as they proceed through their adventure. He starts out as an extra person just to take on the journey, but they transform into a friend. ââ¬Å"It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger. ââ¬Å"(chap. XV) Huck tries to squeal on Jim but canââ¬â¢t because he remembers that Jim called him ââ¬Å"de besââ¬â¢ frenââ¬â¢ I ever had;â⬠¦ de onââ¬â¢y white genlman dat ever kepââ¬â¢ his promise to ole Jim. ââ¬Å"(chap. XVI) Huck realizes that he can not turn Jim in since they both act as runaway outcasts on the river. The support they have for each other sprouts friendship. As does the Widow, Jim allows Huck security, but Jim is not as confining as is the Widow. Like Tom Sawyer, Jim is intelligent but his intelligence is not as intimidating or as imaginary as is Tomââ¬â¢s. As does Pap, Jim allows Huck freedom, but he does it in a loving, rather than an uncaring, fashion. Thus, early, in their relationship on Jacksonââ¬â¢s Island, Huck says to Jim, ââ¬Å"This is nice. I wouldnââ¬â¢t want to be nowhere else but here. â⬠This feeling is in marked contrast with Huckââ¬â¢s feelings concerning other people in the early part of the novel where he always is uncomfortable and wishes to leave them. The lack of comfort is also shared by Jim. As a slave, he truly feels like an outcast. Considering the context of the United States at that period, during the slavery conflict, we easily understand the situation of Jim. And one of the main ideas of this Mark Twainââ¬â¢s masterpiece deals with a multiracial coupleââ¬â¢s story. The relationship between black and white was hardly accepted in the 1830ââ¬â¢s. Such an adventure, two male characters, with opposite colour of skin, striking up a friendship, was considered as a provocation by the society. The author knows that very well and will try, through his two heroes, to denounce the drifting of the Nation. Irony is his main weapon against that obscurantism. He uses it as often as possible. For instance, on chapter XIV, Huck tries to explain to Jim why a Frenchman is a man, even if he speaks differently. The ironical feature comes from the fact that this black slave doesnââ¬â¢t understand the equality of all people, whereas himself isnââ¬â¢t considered equal by the white. Besides, another ironical aspect is that we think first, in that chapter, that the white boy will civilize the black man whereas weââ¬â¢ll discover further that it is the contrary. First person brings the reader a more innocent side of the story, so the reader feels more compassion for the small boy. The symbolic image falls into play between Huck and Jim, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ en trash is what people is dat puts dirt on de head er dey frenââ¬â¢s en makes ââ¬â¢em ashamedâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"(chap. XV), this made Huck open his eyes for the first time in his life. Jim for the first time shows feelings for Huck and lets him know you donââ¬â¢t treat people who care for you like ââ¬Å"trashâ⬠. This makes Huck aware that Jim means more to him than just someoneââ¬â¢s slave, he now considers him a true friend. Next, Huck finally sees Jimââ¬â¢s loyalty toward him, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ so Jim he said he would stand the first half of it for meâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"(chap. XX), keeping a special watch not waking him on his turn, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ I went to sleep, and Jim didnââ¬â¢t call me when it was my turnâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"(chap. XXIII). Even the little things like not waking Huck, show more than just an undying friendship. The symbolism of a grown man and a child had more effect instead of having two grown men, because a child needs a father figure. Jim fit the description and perfectly provided that for him. The mutual affection between Huck and Jim will even lead them to sorts of sacrifices. When Huck discovers that Jim has been captured, Huck must decide whether to turn in Jim and tell Miss Watson, or accept going to hell. He finally chooses ââ¬Å"hellâ⬠when he says, ââ¬Å"I took it [letter to Miss Watson] up, and held it in my hand. I was a-trembling, because Iââ¬â¢d got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it. I studied a minuteâ⬠¦ and then says to myself: ââ¬ËAll right, then, Iââ¬â¢ll go to hell,ââ¬â¢ and tore it up. ââ¬Å"(chap. XXXI) Huckââ¬â¢s sacrifice for his friend Jim, a man he has come to view as a father, forces Huck to accept a life of everlasting pain and anguish. In reality, Huckââ¬â¢s sacrifice is a noble and uncharacteristic achievement, allowing Huck to unknowingly be bound for heaven. Jimââ¬â¢s sacrifice, although small in his own mind, is in fact one of the bravest sacrifices made throughout this book. For example, after Tom gets shot in the leg, Jim displays his concern for Tom as he says, ââ¬Å"No, sah-I doanââ¬â¢ budge a step outââ¬â¢n dis place ââ¬Ëdout a doctor; not if itââ¬â¢s forty year! â⬠Despite all of the racist and harsh tricks Tom has played on Jim, Jim risks his life to save his ââ¬Å"friend. â⬠Rather than abandon Tom, Jim is willing to risk his freedom to save Tomââ¬â¢s life. Moreover, as Jim makes this brave sacrifice, Huck thinks to himself, ââ¬Å"I knowed he was white inside. ââ¬Å"(chap. XL) Through Jimââ¬â¢s sacrifice for Tom, Huck discovers that all men, including blacks, are in fact equal. Huck no longer looks down upon Jim as a ââ¬Å"nigger,â⬠but rather as an equal human being. Lastly, the doctor describes Jimââ¬â¢s heroic sacrifice to the Phelps and tells them that, ââ¬Å"He ainââ¬â¢t a bad niggerâ⬠¦ and I never see a nigger that was a better nuss or faithfuler, and yet he was risking his freedom to do it [save Tom]. ââ¬Å"(chap.XLII) Jim risked his freedom to save an insolent, racist white boy who had treated him, not as an equal, but as an inferior, unequal nigger. Jimââ¬â¢s sacrifice is clearly an act of bravery far more heroic than the sacrifice Huck made earlier in the novel. Huck and Jimââ¬â¢s sacrifices for each other, however different, also present many similarities. For example, Huck and Jim both think they are sacrificing themselves for a friend. Huck sacrifices himself for a black friend he has come to love as an equal. Similarly, Jim sacrifices himself for a friend, when in reality, he is risking his freedom to save the life of a racial bigot, Tom. In addition, both sacrifices have as a consequence a life of everlasting hell. When Huck sacrifices himself for Jim, he accepts a literal hell (that is truly the path to heaven). Jim, on the other hand, accepts a life of figurative hell in slavery, when he is in fact free all along. Finally, each sacrifice shares irony, in that they were both based on unknown pieces of unknown, but significannot pieces of information. Huck is unaware that his decision of accepting ââ¬Å"hellâ⬠will actually lead to his salvation and ironically decides on doing what the thinks is ââ¬Å"wrong. ââ¬Å"Likewise, Jim is unaware that he is free, and is not risking his freedom in saving Tom. In making these two brave sacrifices, Huck and Jim achieve a higher character than if they had chosen easier paths. Huckââ¬â¢s willingness to face hell to protect Jim and Jimââ¬â¢s willingness to face capture and slavery to save Tom, both contribute to the overall theme of racial equality/inequality present throughout the book. Huck and Jimââ¬â¢s journey down the Mississippi River has led them to look past colour boundaries, and discover that ââ¬Å"all me are created equal. ââ¬Å"
